Swine Flu Pandemic- How is Swine Flu transmitted?

Swine influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by influenza virus type A, which regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine influenza viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates for pigs. Swine influenza viruses in pigs may be marketed, all year round, but most outbreaks occur in the late autumn and winter months, similar outbreaks in humans. The classical swine influenza virus was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

People with poultry and pigs, especially those with intense exposures, are at increased risk of infection with zoonotic influenza virus which is endemic in these animals, and constitute a population of human hosts in the zoonosis and reassortment can co-occur. These workers are vaccinated against influenza and monitoring the new influenza strains in this population has therefore become an important measure of public health. Transmission of influenza viruses from pigs to humans who work with the pigs were accepted in a small study monitored in 2004 at the Iowa University. This study among others forms the basis for a recommendation that people whose jobs deal with handling poultry and swine focus on increased surveillance of public health. Other occupations that are at particular risk of infection are veterinarians and meat processing workers, although the risk of infection for these two groups is lower than that of agricultural workers.

Like all influenza viruses, swine influenza viruses are constantly changing. Pigs can be infected by human influenza and avian influenza viruses, and swine influenza viruses. In the case of influenza viruses from different species infect pigs, the virus can reassert and new viruses which are mixture of swine, human or avian influenza viruses can emerge. Over the years several variations of swine influenza viruses have emerged predominantly. At this time, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes which is isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2 and H3N1. Most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs were H1N1 viruses.

Studies are under consideration as to how particular swine flu is transmitted. Influenza is usually on the respiratory tract. Droplets of infected body fluids, people coughing or sneezing may lead to this infection. Studies suggest that masks, called N95 respirator masks, if appropriately used, filter germs from the air and hamper the spread of the flu. Neither contact with pigs nor eating pork has been associated with the spread of the flu.
